The Michael McCormick Gallery has always celebrated Indian Market here in Taos.
This weekend Santa Fe will be the center of Native Arts and Culture in the West, but Taos has always played a part in making Indian Market the huge draw it has become. Many of the Market’s most acclaimed artists and artisans are from here, including the incredibly talented designer Patricia Michaels and jeweler, Maria Samora. Michael McCormick has always acknowledged Taos’ singular place in Native Arts and Crafts.
This year Tree Menane’s Seldom Creek Ranch Gallery is partnering with Michael to honor the wonderful Native artists who live or have lived and worked here in Taos. This is a rare collaboration between two of the most spectacular galleries showing contemporary South Western Art, in Taos. Hopefully it will become a tradition and in the future, others will get involved.
This year’s celebration will feature the new work (and new direction), of Malcolm Furlow. His piece, Last Chief At Standing Rock is featured here. Malcolm will be at the McCormick Gallery along with the fabulously talented Tim Tate Nevaquaya, who also has new work exhibited at the gallery.
Michael’s late friend, the renowned Navajo artist who called Taos home for most of his adult life. R.C. Gorman will be there in spirit. His ceramics will also be on display, along with rare works by his father, Carl Gorman. Work from Frank Howell’s estate, along with works by Fritz Scholder, C.J. Wells and sculptor Doug Hyde will also be shown this weekend.
Internationally renowned artist Bill Worrell will also have work on hand at the McCormick Gallery – a couple of his Llano River sand paintings and a sculpture have already arrived from the Texas hill country where he lives and has his studio.
As always, the Michael McCormick Gallery Celebrates Indian Market in style! This year local favourites, Bone Orchard (featured in this month’s Taos Magazine), will be playing live. Dan Pretends- Eagle, the band’s guitarist and founding member, is half Standing Rock Sioux.
There will be a Native Feast – Taos Pueblo Green Chili Stew (with or without meat), other delicious treats and plenty of refreshments.
The party starts around 4:00 pm on Saturday and will end at 8:00 or so. Generally Michael has an open house both days over the weekend so people coming up from Santa Fe on Sunday, can join in on the fun.
