It’s Tuesday, Cinco de Mayo day, which falls every year on May 5!
It’s the day that Mexico commemorates the victory of the Battle of Puebla of 1862, when the Mexican army had an unlikely victory over the French, even though the Mexican army was woefully outnumbered two to one by a much better-equipped French army.
Five years after the victory, a group of Mexicans residing in Texas began to celebrate the date with songs and poetry, thus becoming a tradition of celebration across the USA.
It has also been said that more non-Mexicans celebrate this day as a wonderful excuse to indulge in the delicious cuisine of our neighbors south of the border, not to mention enjoying the ubiquitous tequila-based cocktails.
This year, there are many virtual parties as well as virtual visits to favorite vacation spots throughout Mexico. Google Cinco de Mayo to find one that resonates with you.
And in keeping with the spirit of the day, you may want to purchase a few ingredients, including a bottle of tequila, to celebrate authentically!
We recommend the following recipe to add some spice and cheer to your life, and also as a reminder that summer is almost here and Lockdown will soon be a thing of memory.
Maybe one day, we’ll even have a Lockdown Day to commemorate this crazy time!
Tequila Guacamole
3 avocados
1/4 cup (60 mL) finely minced red onion
Juice of 1 lime
1 tomato, seeded and diced
1/4 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped (optional)
1 shot (3 Tbsp/45 mL.) tequila (Mezcal suggested)
Salt, pepper to taste
Coriander for garnish
Using a fork, crush avocado in a bowl. Add all other ingredients and mix.
